WB6 Banquet Silver Streaks head coach Tim Dougherty was a no-show for Wednesday night's Western Big-6 Conference preseason football banquet held in Rock Island. Dougherty joined Quincy's Rick Little, who never makes the trip, as those who left seats vacant in the annual preview of the upcoming season. The four Quad City coaches revealed little about the players on their teams, opting to talk more about their coaching staffs and schedules than what players will be leading them into Friday night battles this season. Defending champion Moline looks to be the favorite again this year, with a nod to Dave DeJaegher's always tough Alleman Pioneers, who are coming off of a last second playoff loss in the second round from a year ago. Rock Island will be rebuilding under new coach Brian Stortz, who comes to Rocky via Lake Zurich, and replaces longtime coach Vic Boblett--who was in attendance last night. Meet The Streaks The preseason scrimmage for the Galesburg boys soccer teams will be held Thursday night at the YMCA complex. The Fresh/Soph action begins at 6 o'clock, with the varsity to follow at 7:30. The requested admission is a six-pack of sports drink such as gatorade or powerade. Friday night, the football team will have their dress rehearsal at Van Dyke Field, beginning with the Freshmen at 6 and ending with the varsity at 8. Midwest Conference Football coaches in the Midwest Conference apparently feel there's more to Monmouth College than the recently graduated All-American quarterback Alex Tanney. The annual preseason poll was released Wednesday, and it shows the defending league champion Fighting Scots are favored again this season, along with the Blueboys of Illinois College. Both teams received 93 points in the balloting of coaches. Knox is expected to be in the conference basement, as the Prairie Fire generated just 15 points of support. The Midwest Conference volleyball favorite is league newcomer Cornell. The Rams, who are returning to the conference after more than a decade away, are expected to take the title, while Monmouth is rated third, and Knox once again comes in last.
