New Attempt to Rescind Blago Budget Cuts
Here's another attempt to restore Gov. Rod Blagojevich's budget cuts, and it comes in the final days of this General Assembly session.

Last fall, the Legislature swept some dedicated funds into a new "budget relief fund," intended to preserve state facilities and services and hundreds of jobs. The Governor did not release all the money. The House Monday made another try, voting to restore more than $11 million to the Secretary of State's office, $6.5 million to the Attorney General's office, and just over $1 million to the Treasurer's office.

Also included: some wildlife-related funds the federal government ordered the state to restore, some grant programs in the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, and a health information exchange program in the Department of Healthcare and Family Services.

State Rep. Gary Hannig (D-Litchfield), the top budget officer in the House, says the priority was to prevent layoffs, though the bill does not address state parks and historic sites which closed. The Senate could take up the bill today.

SB 1132 passed the House, 113-0.
