Group Continues Push for Rural Transit in Knox County
A group that wants to bring rural transit to Knox County is beginning the final phase of the project that officials have worked on for more than a year.

A rural transit system could serve the needs of Knox County residents by getting them to medical appointments, shopping destinations, education, and jobs. Dawn Piper, a transit coordination specialist for the Illinois Institute of Rural Affairs, says if you're in rural parts of the county you really don't have many options to get around.

Piper tells WGIL it's an ongoing process to make the rural transit system happen, and the end results would be worth the time and effort that's gone into the project.

"The general process for the entire primer we say to set aside between 18 and 24 months. So it's a long process, but it is guaranteed that if the county follows this, at the end of those months you will have a coordinated public transit system."

Knox County is slated for more than $170,000 of funding from the federal government over a three-year period. The funds for the rural transit project will not go away unless a complete collapse of the federal government happens.

Piper says rural and public transit is not a glamorous topic, but it is a important one that can help people get the most out of their their lives.
