FIRST ON WGIL: Poverty Report Will Not Be Presented to City Council -- DOWNLOAD REPORT HERE
POSTED 7:30pm 1/15/09 The head of a group that put together a report on poverty in Knox County that has already caused some controversy says it's done with its work, and is ready to hand off its work to another similar group.

The Galesburg Community Impact Group says its report, entitled "A Call to Action: Poverty in Knox County" is a good report, and has a lot of good data, but group chairman Rick Sundberg says its research and recommendations should now be handed off to the "Team Knox County" Poverty Task Force, headed by Galesburg Mayoral candidate Sal Garza.

Sundberg tells WGIL even though plenty of people have read the report, it won't formally be presented after all. "We thought the committee did a phenonemal job," Sundberg said. "But there had to be some other things that had to be looked in to. So that's why we went ahead and decided not to propose it with the City Council."

The Galesburg City Council meets Tuesday night next week due to the Martin Luther King Day Holiday.

One of the main recommendations the report made was to, "establish a moratorium on zoning for new multi-family housing within the City of Galesburg" -- one of the recommendations that seemed to draw the most controversy.

Sundberg says he wasn't bothered by most of the criticism, saying that everyone is allowed to have an opinion, believing the report is, quote, "very accurate".
