Tax Season Arrives, E-Filing Now Available
Electronic tax filing with the IRS begins today (Friday).

The IRS is promoting electronic filing as a quick way to get a tax refund without losing a big chunk of it to the fees associated with a refund anticipation loan. David Williams, director of electronic filing for the IRS, says refunds come in about 10 days.

"Given the economic situation in the country today, people are very focused on getting their refunds as soon as possible, and e-filing is the way to do it," Williams said.

Last year, 3.5 million Illinois taxpayers, about 59%, filed electronically. This year the expectation is 3.6 million in Illinois, which would be 61% of the state's 5.9 million federal taxpayers.

Free filing is available at www.IRS.gov, along with the necessary tax forms, which can be filled out electronically. For taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes of $56,000 or less, free tax preparation software is available too.

Taxpayers who owe money can file now and still take until April 15 to pay.
