OSF Saint Mary Medical Center Birthday Celebrations Begin Saturday
A yearlong series of celebrations marking a big birthday for one of Galesburg's two hospitals starts with a special performance this weekend.

OSF Saint Mary Medical Center turns 100 later this year. The hospital's marketing director, Shannon Jansen, says it all started in August of 1909 when the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis purchased the building that Saint Mary's Square, across from the Knox County Courthouse, now occupies. Jansen says the hospital was located there until 1974, when the facility on North Seminary Street was built.

Jansen tells WGIL Saturday night begins a series of events marking that hospital's birth. She says, "The United States Air Force Band of Mid-America Shades of Blue Jazz Ensemble is going to perform. We've also brought in special guest Willard Scott, who everyone knows as America's most beloved weatherman, will be here to speak at that performance as well."

Scott, in addition to being a longtime weather man on NBC's "Today" Show, continues to announce people's 100th birthdays, and Jansen says Scott will talk about the importance of the century mark in the event Saturday night at 6:30 at the Orpheum Theatre that's free and open to the public.
