Galesburg Teacher in Washington for Inauguration
POSTED: 2:40pm 1/20/09 A Galesburg resident who teaches at a Central Illinois school says he's been witness to one big first-hand social studies lesson.

Brian Kennedy was one of the likely thousands of Illinoisans who flocked to Washington to see Barack Obama become President -- he says once he dealt with transportation and security issues and finding a place to stand, it took him all of about two hours to get to the inauguration ceremony, but it was worth it.

Kennedy tells WGIL his middle school-level students students at Robien School in East Peoria really do understand the importance of Obama becoming President.

"A lot of it has to do with their parents being involved with (politics and the Obama campaign) as well," Kennedy said. "I think something President Obama has been able to do is get more people involved in the process, and I think that's opened (the students) up. I've got a lot more kids this time around for the presidential election than in 2004, that have been watching. They watched the debates, they watched 'Saturday Night Live' sketches."

Kennedy says he's kept his personal opinions out of what he's explained to his students -- especially in terms of the legacy now-former President George W. Bush's legacy will be. He says he's told his students much like what happened to Bush's father when he became President, it will likely look more kindly at him as time goes on.

A number of Galesburg residents flocked to our nation's capital, including Knox County Democratic Party Chair Norm Winick and Knox County Regional Superintendent of Schools Bonnie Harris, among others.

Winick has yet to return our phone calls.
