Knox College Students React to Obama Inauguration
POSTED: 2:45pm 1/20/09 Students, and faculty applauded when the new leader of the country officially took his oath of office.

That was the reaction in a Knox College cafeteria Tuesday as nearly 60 people gathered to watch the first African American President take his spot in history. The group sat quietly and listened to the entire ceremony on a corner television in the cafeteria while more students throughout the festivities stopped in to witness the event.

Knox student Nicole Thompson says she thought people came out to the event to witness history and in support of their elected candidate. Thompson tells WGIL she thinks a big issue Barack Obama will have to deal with is his race. "Just like getting respect from different people, mostly because he's African-American and the first African-American President, and not everybody believes in the fact that he'll be able to do his job correctly," Thompson said. He'll have to be strong. He has no other choice."

Thompson's classmate Erika Holland says her teacher brought the class to the cafeteria to watch the inauguration. She said it was pretty interesting to watch, saying it was the first inauguration she's actually seen. Holland says Obama covered issues well with his speech and thinks that the biggest issues facing Obama will be the state of the economy and the current war on terror.
