Man Accused of Sex With Girl at Campground to Serve Prison Time
POSTED 2:43pm 1/21/09 A Galesburg man has agreed to a lengthy prison sentence for what a Knox County Circuit Court Judge called a "horrendus" crime.

Judge James Stewart sentenced 34-year old William Mazurek to 15-years in prison after he pleaded guilty Wednesday afternoon to the Class-X felony charge of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child. Mazurek had been scheduled for a bench trial.

Mazurek was arrested June third, after he is accused of forcing sexual contact with a nine-year old girl at Allison Lake Storey Campground. Police reports indicate that Mazurek was part of a group that included some of the girl's family that was camping at the facility, when, during the early morning hours, he allegedly woke the girl up, took her to a bathroom at the campground, and forced her to perrform a sex act on her, at which time he then did the same to her.

Knox County Assistant State's Attorney Erik Gibson says a DNA test conducted on the girl's nightgown linked Mazurek to the crime.

Stewart told Mazurek had the bench trial commenced and he would have been found guilty, he would have faced a much longer sentence. Statute indicates the assault charge carries a possible six to 30-year sentence.

Mazurek received credit for 280 days already served in the Knox County Jail, but must serve at least 85-percent of his prison term before be can be considered for parole, under the state's Truth in Sentencing Law.
