GOP: Blago Will Get Fair Trial
Republicans in the Illinois Senate insist Gov. Rod Blagojevich will get a fair trial, whether or not he shows up.

The rules governing introduction of evidence and subpoenaing of witnesses are based on the rules used in the U.S. Senate for the impeachment of President Clinton 10 years ago, says State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale). Since Clinton was acquitted and not removed from office, that proves the rules are fair.

State Sen. Matt Murphy (R-Palatine) says the looser rules on the introduction of evidence should help the governor in his defense, if he chose to mount a defense, because he could present affidavits from the likes of Rahm Emanuel, Valerie Jarrett and U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Chicago) without subjecting them to cross-examination. All three of those individuals have said in news interviews or public statements that the governor never approached them or any intermediaries on their behalf with demands in exchange for naming one of them to the U.S. Senate.

State Sen. Carole Pankau (R-Roselle) says the impeachment case isn't really about the governor's alleged crimes, it’s about abuse of constitutional power.

These senators, along with Sen. John Millner (R-Carol Stream) spoke at a press conference Friday morning in the dining room of a restaurant in Glen Ellyn.
