State Gas Prices Continue to Rise
The January gas prices seem to be a good news - bad news kind of story. Locally, gas prices are below the statewide average with most Galesburg retailers selling their gas at about 1 dollar 87 cents per gallon.

On the flip side, according to the Triple-A Chicago Motor club, for some unexplained reason, the price of gas continues to rise with the statewide average price for a gallon costing drivers 1 dollar 92 cents. Triple-A spokesman Nicole Niemi says it's possible gasoline was under priced in December and this increase may be to make up for the lower price last month. "It could absolutly be a correction from that but I think time will tell if prices continue to go up in a month when we're talking in February, if gas prices have gone up again, and crude oil has fallen, that's unprecedented."

Niemi says this is not typical at all and does not follow trends that the agency sees every year. She says the increase doesn't make much sense because Triple-A is not seeing a lot of increased demand because it's not the typical driving season. Niemi also cites the falling price of crude oil as a reason the price of gas should be falling. Crude oil is trading at about 43 dollars a barrel.

Drivers should feel a little better knowing that last January, drivers paid 1 dollar 27 cents more when the average price of gas was 3 dollars and 19 cents.
