Aledo-Westmer to be Mercer County Golden Eagles
The Aledo-Westmer consolidated school district now has a name and mascot, the Mercer County Golden Eagles.

The name of the school, Mercer County , won over Mercer on almost a 2-to-1 margin by student vote Wednesday. The Golden Eagles was the top vote choice for mascot by students from both districts Wednesday. The colors will be navy blue, gold and white.

A total of 694 votes were cast. The school board took final action on the name and mascot Wednesday night.

The Golden Eagles beat out the Black Knights, 259 to 241. The Cobras was next with 152. The Generals and River Pirates finished fourth and fifth. A committee came up with the five choices out of more than 1,000 submissions from the community.

"There were some that were off the wall, and then there were a bunch of good ones, so we just went through and picked all the good ones. I am happy with the Golden Eagles," committee member C.J. DeSpain, a sophomore at Westmer Secondary School, said.

The committee consisted of two students from both districts, a representative of both districts’ parent teacher organizations, the two schools' athletic directors, Aledo band director and Aledo-Westmer head football coach.
