IRS Encouraging More E-filing This Year
The Internal Revenue service this year is again encouraging people to file their taxes electronically.

E-filing, which is available now, is promoted by the IRS as a quick way to get tax refunds without losing part of them to fees associated with refund anticipation loans. Figures from the government show that 3.5 million Illinois taxpayers, or about 59 percent, filed electronically last year. The number is expected to go up this year.

David Williams, IRS director of electronic filing, says there are no longer fees for E-filing federal income tax returns. "No matter who you are, no matter what your income level, you can fill out your tax return electronically using tax software, and file it electronically for free," Williams said. "You don't have to pay for any of it."

Williams says free filing is available at www.IRS.gov. The necessary tax forms can also be found at that address. Free tax preparation software is also available for taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes under $56,000.

Williams says refunds through E-filing typically come in about 10 days.
