Quinn Ready for Impeachment Trial
The Illinois Senate begins its trial of Gov. Rod Blagojevich today.

The Senate will be deciding whether to throw the governor out of office. In two weeks, Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn could be sworn in as governor. Quinn says removal will thwart Blagojevich, but to clean up Illinois politics in general will require a new attitude.

"The general issue...of the need for reform and eliminating the corruption tax goes above and beyond the next few weeks," Quinn said. "This is something that has plagued Illinois for a long time and we wanna stop it."

Quinn says he expects the Senate to do a solemn, serious and somber job on the trial. He says senators should evaluate the evidence and vote their conscience.

The governor is accused by the FBI of trying to shake down various individuals and businesses for campaign contributions, and of trying to make personal gain through his authority to fill a vacancy in the U.S. Senate. Members of the Illinois House of Representatives, who voted overwhelmingly to impeach the governor on Jan. 9 and Jan. 14, said they had enough evidence to impeach him even without taking into account the not-yet-adjudicated federal charges.
