FIRST ON WGIL: Smurfit-Stone Files Chapter 11; Spokesman Says No Impact on Galesburg Plant
UPDATED 11:33am 1/26/09 A spokesman with a Chicago-based maker of cardboard products says the company's Chapter 11 filing today will not have an impact on Galesburg.

Smurfit-Stone is filing Chapter-11 in a Delaware bankruptcy court, as a way, officials say, to hopefully restructure three-point-five billion dollars in company debt.

Smurfit-Stone Director of Media Relations Mike Mullin declined WGIL's request for an on-air interview, but says as talks about filing Chapter 11 went on, specific closings or business locations were never talked about, and, "never will" -- and that includes the Galesburg plant on South Linwood Road.

Mullin says the company is meeting and communicating with employees today, and that work is going on as normal.

Mullin says Smurfit-Stone is proud of its employees, and proud of the fact that it has the safest working facilities in the industry.

The Galesburg Smurfit-Stone plant makes corrugated containers, and Mullin says it has roughly one-hundred employees.
