Impeachment Trial Underway - Links to Live Audio/Video Here
The Illinois Senate is moving slowly, but surely, toward putting witnesses on the stand in the impeachment trial against Gov. Rod Blagojevich. The trial started promptly at noon, with presiding Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas Fitzgerald asking a critical -- but expected -- question: Is the governor present? The silence was brief, but poignant.

Chief prosecutor Dave Ellis, who is the attorney to House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago), told Senators that FBI Special Agency Daniel Kane will be able to testify. He's the agent who signed the affidavit about the wiretaps cited in the criminal corruption complaint against the governor.

Four of the taped conversations will be played during this trial, along with parts of radio programs in which the governor talked about the tapes, even admitted that the voice on the tape was his.

Another nugget in the beginning of this trial: Ellis says the U.S. attorney's office told him it's planning to indict the governor in April.

As of 5pm Monday, the impeachment trial is in recess until 9:45am Tuesday.
