Impeachment Trial First, Rest of State's Business Later
Illinois senators are eager to finish the governor's impeachment trial, because they are in for a tough legislative session.

Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) says the impeachment trial was scheduled for this week and next because after that, the regular session of the Legislature is due to begin.

State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale) says the state will have to deal with a budget deficit in the vicinity of $5 billion. Also needed is a capital constriction plan.

State Sen. Matt Murphy (R-Palatine) says if Gov. Rod Blagojevich is thrown out and Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn takes over as governor, he expects him to be easier to work with than Blagojevich, who is often antagonistic toward lawmakers. However, Murphy fears that Quinn would be more likely to agree to a tax increase than Blagojevich.
