Impeachment Trial Day 1 Wrapup
The FBI agent who authored the 76-page report made public the day Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested will be the main witness when the impeachment trial resumes today.

Special agent Dan Cain oversaw the wiretapping of the governor's phones to record conversations which allegedly show Blagojevich trying to trade official actions for money or other benefits -- up to and including an appointment to the U.S. Senate. State senators, who are jurors in the trial, will hear conversations, though not about that. Audio tapes purporting to portray discussion of a bill involving horse racing have been approved to be played before the Senate.

Prosecutor David Ellis, chief counsel to Speaker Mike Madigan (D-Chicago) and the House Democrats, is serving as prosecutor in the case. He told senators in his opening remarks Monday that Blagojevich put his office up for sale, and directed his subordinates to carry out his plans -- not "idle chatter." Ellis says he's asking senators to remove Blagojevich from office based on Blagojevich's words and actions, not those of others.
