Former Galesburg Basketball Star Facing Sex Assaut Charge
A Galesburg High School graduate who went on to play basketball in the Quad Cities is facing charges in his hometown after an alleged incident last weekend involving a woman.

19-year old John Peters of Silvis was arrested around 4:45 Sunday afternoon after questioning by police at the Galesburg Public Safety Building for criminal sexual assault and unlawful restraint. He's being held in the Knox County Jail on $50,000 bond after making his first court appearance on Monday.

Peters, who graduated from Galesburg High School in 2007 and was an all-conference player for the Silver Streaks, is a sophomore member of the Black Hawk College men's basketball team. Peters is accused of assaulting an 18-year woman Saturday night during a party inside a bathroom at a Duffield Avenue residence.

Peters told police he did not force sexual contact on the woman. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday for a first appearance with a public defender.

Black Hawk College officials say Peters has been suspended from the basketball team that he leads in both scoring and rebounding.
