Hare: Stimulus Bill Will Help Galesburg Projects
UPDATED 5:31pm 1/28/09 A local Congressman says the economic stimulus bill that the House approved Wednesday evening will benefit some Galesburg projects that have long been planned.

17th District Democrat Phil Hare says despite the fact that some may consider it pork, money in the 825-billion dollar package is money that could help the construction of the National Railroad Hall of Fame, and the three railroad crossing grade separations at the Seminary and Main Street crossings.

Hare says he hopes Illinois' influence in the White House and cabinet can help make money for those projects a reality. "I'm getting a meeting with (former 18th District Congressman) Ray LaHood, our new Transportation Secretary, in the next couple of weeks. Ray and I kind of double-teamed the railroad overpasses," Hare said. "What I'm going to do with all these projects...is sit down with him, and talk to him about this. I'm also going to have a meeting with Senator (Dick) Durbin, who's on the Appropriations Committee in the Senate, to try and get additional funds for those overpasses and for the museum."

Hare says the money in all the projects is essentially use it or lose it, so the projects need to be ready to begin if they're funded.

Hare says as it's written, the stimulus bill has about a billion dollars for road projects in Illinois, and over a half-billion for mass transit projects.

The House Wednesday evening approved the stimulus bill on a vote of 244-188. Hare voted for the stimulus bill, while 18th District Congressman Aaron Schock voted against it, citing a lack of transparency and not enough infrastructure spending.
