Blagojevich Wants to Speak At Impeachment Trial
POSTED 3:22pm, UPDATED 4:36pm 1/28/09 In an about-face, Gov. Rod Blagojevich will appear before the Illinois Senate on Thursday.

The governor has asked Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) for the chance to act as his own attorney and give a closing argument. Cullerton says according to the rules, Blagojevich will be given 90 minutes.

Blagojevich has so far boycotted this impeachment trial, saying it was a kangaroo court. But now he'll make his case before the Senate at approximately 11 a.m.

Here's how the schedule will work:

* Lead prosecutor Dave Ellis will give closing arguments at 10 a.m.

* Then the Senate will give leave to the governor to take to the witness stand for 90 minutes.

* After that, Ellis will be granted a 30-minute rebuttal.

This means the Senate will likely vote Thursday afternoon, depending on how they'll deliberate -- be it within their own caucuses or on the floor with a closed chamber -- and how long they'll take before hitting the switches.
