Contractor Group Pushes for Tougher Codes at Knox County Board Meeting
Several contractors from the area made a stop at the Knox County Board meeting Wednesday night to express their concerns about building codes in Knox County.

Rougly 50 contractors showed up. Rory Washington, executive director of the Tri-City Building and Construction Trades Council, says strong codes build strong buildings and protect the public. Washington tells WGIL there needs to be more oversight to keep people safe.

"Building codes do protect lives. There may be, unfortunately, some additional cost to more stringent building codes. But in the long run the public safety is probably the primary concern for all of us."

Washington says there's no benefit to Knox County by having different sets of building codes that might not be the standard in nearby communities.

Washington says when people move into a home they want to be sure that the building is properly constructed. Washington says some of the code infractions he's recently seen include electrical and plumbing problems, and as good as contractors are, there's always some who cut corners.
