| Galesburg, Warren County Unemployment Sees Small November-December Drop |
Unemployment is up virtually everywhere in Illinois compared to last year, but the month-to-month numbers in the Galesburg area aren't as bad. The latest numbers from the Illinois Department of Employment Security show over-the-year unemployment rates for December went up in all 12 of the state's metropolitan areas for the 20th consecutive month. Seven metro areas posted their highest rates for December on record, which dates back to 1990. Locally, unemployment rates range from 1% higher in Knox County to 2.4% in Henry County between December of last year and that same month in 2007. The state says Manufacturing, Leisure-Hospitality and the Retail Trade sectors in the Galesburg area experienced the biggest job declines. The area's unemployment rate jumped from 5.8% in December of 2007 to 6.8% last month. The rates between November and December of last year, however, fell 3-tenths of a percent in Galesburg and Warren County. Unemployment in the city is 7.4% and 6.2% in Warren County. Knox County's 7.1% unemployment rate last month is unchanged from November. Unemployment went up between 1 and 9-tenths of a percent in Fulton, Henry and Henderson counties. Henderson has the highest rate at 8.1%. IDES Director Maureen O'Donnell says the state continues to evaluate how to best help people during these difficult times. That includes the addition of staff, expanded TeleServe hours for claim certification and encouraging people to use the IDES website to file for unemployment insurance.
