Mr. Burris Goes to Washington
U.S. Senate appointee Roland Burris is on his way to Washington, where he expects to be sworn in as Illinois' newest U.S. senator.

Burris was picked by Gov. Rod Blagojevich after the governor was arrested and accused of trying to sell the vacant senate seat for personal gain.

Speaking to the media and a small group of supporters at Midway Airport before his departure Monday afternoon, Burris said he hasn't had any contact with the governor since the appointment and has not talked with President-elect Barack Obama. Obama has said that he does not approve of any appointment made by Blagojevich.

Burris has been called on to testify before the Illinois House Impeachment Committee and says he will likely do so Thursday. The House subpoenaed Burris to testify Wednesday about his appointment to the Senate, but Burris says that would interfere with his senatorial duties.

U.S. Senate Democrats have said they would not seat Burris, who says if they refuse to do so his lawyer will take action. Burris has already asked the State Supreme Court to clear the way for his appointment, but the court has yet to take action.

Burris denies having anything to do with allegations against the governor.
