Good Samaritan Dies Trying to Assist at Scene of Car Crash
Officials in Mercer County say a woman died after coming into contact with downed power lines at the scene of an accident.

The sheriff's department says deputies and emergency personnel from Alexis and North Henderson responded to a one-vehicle crash with injuries around 5:15 p-m Thursday on 320th Street near the intersection of 1st Avenue. Authorities say a vehicle occupied by two juvenile girls was traveling north on 320th Street when the driver lost control, went off the road and struck a power pole that broke. The vehicle rolled over and eventually came to rest on its top.

Police say both of the vehicle's occupants were taken to Galesburg Cottage Hospital for treatment. Their names were not released.

Officials say a short time after the crash a woman from rural Alexis attempted to assist the two injured girls, and in the process, came into contact with the power lines from the downed pole and died.

A funeral home has identified the victim as 57-year old Patricia Higgins. Her funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday morning.
