Galesburg City Clerk Now Officially Retired
Galesburg's longtime City Clerk can now officially call it a career.

Friday was the last day on the job for Anita Carlton. She's been city clerk for over 25 years, and spent eight years before that in the City Election office.

Carlton tells WGIL up until now, even though there have been a couple of celebrations in her honor, she's not wanted to think much about going. "It's a little bittersweet, but I'm ready," Carlton said. "I've loved being the clerk. I love people, so it's been a really great job for me. I've been able to help, maybe, a few people in a small way, and I loved doing that."

Carlton says she's also loved the myriad of community activities she's been involved in, from Leadership Greater Galesburg, to the C-SPAN re-enactment of the Knox College Lincoln-Douglas Debate, among others. She says she still wants to be involved in the community somehow now that she's retired. But first, Carlton says she's taking a vacation to Florida. And who can blame her.

Kelli Bennewitz, Carlton's top deputy, will be interim clerk, but is also running unopposed for a full term at that job in the April seventh election.
