Medical Group Informs Public About Arthritis, Fibromyalgia
Several local officials were on hand at the Kensington last week to discuss and inform residents about arthritis and fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a condition that causes widespread pain in muscles and tendons throughout the body. It affects more than 6-million patients nationwide, and those afflicted with the ailment have disturbances in their sleeping patterns, fatigue and psychological stress, all of which can affect quality of life.

Dr. Usharani Kumar was one of the featured speakers at the event. Kumar tells WGIL doctors can't pin down a specific cause for the disease.

"Nobody knows the cause exactly because it's a complex situation...a lot of events like injury, stressful situations and any one which causes trauma can (be a) trigger."

A group of about 40 people, many elderly, took part in a presentation, Q&A session, and an exercise demonstration by a representative from the Arthritis Foundation. State Representative Don Moffitt introduced the event and talked about stiffness he has in his knees and how he looked forward to hearing the presentation.

Officials said fibromyalgia symptoms can be invisible to family and friends, which can be very frustrating for patients who have the disorder.
