Abingdon City-Wide Trash Proposal Vote in April
Abingdon residents will get to weigh in on whether a city-wide trash collection service should be implemented.

The city council Monday night voted 6-0 to approve a question that will go on the ballot in April. It reads: "should the city of Abingdon provide refuse, recycling and yard waste collection and disposal services to residents?" The council also plans to schedule at least two town hall meetings to answer questions and provide other information about the proposed service. Aldermen didn't set specific dates, but the meetings will likely be held next month and in March.

An opponent of the city-wide trash collection plan, Ann Stegall of Abingdon, tells WGIL the arrangement is fine the way it is now.

"I think that it should not go about because I think people should have a choice of who they want for their garbage pick-ups. We have not had a problem with this over the years, everybody gets to choose who they want and I do believe that's the way to go."

Also opposed to the plan to essentially force all residents to have waste collection service is Lloyd Yoho, who owns Abingdon Salvage with his wife Joanne. The company is one of two waste collectors that most Abingdon residents use. Lloyd Yoho recommended that the city council also put on the ballot that the cost for a proposed city-wide trash collection service will be on citizens' water bills.

The city council began looking into a city-wide trash collection service as a way to get residents in some parts of town to clean up their property.
