Quinn Forms Political Corruption Commission
Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn is convening a commission on government reform, which he says, will recommend reforms on which lawmakers can act this year. Illinois stands with the current governor accused of soliciting personal gain in order to perform his official duties, and the previous governor is in prison for corruption.

Quinn says Illinois should set a better example and the corruption tradition in Illinois government is an embarrassment. "I think all of us have been embarrassed -- maybe even humiliated -- by the fact that as we go, perhaps, to other places, or people from other places come here, they're laughing at the Illinois Government, that it isn't operating for the common good or the public interest," Quinn said.

Quinn has selected Patrick Collins, who spent 12 years prosecuting crooked politicians in the US Attorney's office, to lead the commission. The commission will evaluate Illinois' governmental and political laws, policies, procedures and traditions and consider changes that can make government less corrupt, or less tempting to corruptible people.

The rest of the commission hasn't been picked yet and members will not be paid. The group is expected to hold a series of hearings and recommend reforms by the end of March, in time for lawmakers to consider reforms for this year.
