GOP Still Sounding Special Election Call
Two top state government officials Wednesday responded to Roland Burris' plea to the Illinois Supreme Court. Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan claim White's signature on Burris' appointment papers isn't legally necessary. The response says the use of the word "shall" means the secretary of state's signature is only recommended, and that the U.S. Senate could accept Burris at any moment.

The state Supreme Court could rule on whether White’s signature is mandatory -- or decide not to take up the issue -- at any time.

Meanwhile, the Illinois Republican Party is blasting Democrats on the state and federal level over the seat. Party chairman Andy McKenna thinks U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) are cutting a backroom deal with Burris. McKenna says Illinois Democrats should immediately vote for a special election, instead of letting this Burris drama play out.
