GHS Learning Center Upgrades Still Planned
There continues to be some concern about the scope of a project that Galesburg School District officials say has to be done to a part of Galesburg High School.

The Galesburg School Board's Building Committee learned Thursday afternoon about what were the final plans for work to remove the asbestos in the GHS learning center wing, first starting to be designed after a state inspector found what they thought was a fresh hole in an asbestos ceiling tile in an unused room in the Learning Center -- one that the district claims had been there a long time.

The renovations include an overhaul of three classrooms in the wing, the replacement of a number of windows, and some other work in addition to the asbestos removal.

District-205 Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Paul Woehlke says sure, the project goes well beyond just removal of asbestos, but that's okay. "In my mind, we're not being excessive about anything," Woehlke said. "I guess what we're adding on is trying to make the space...enhance the usability of the space, to meet the current technology environment."

Woehlke declined to put a dollar amount on the project -- however, when the project was discussed at a meeting in September, the cost was $1.8 million.

Bids are expected to be sought later this month on the project, and could be brought to the full Galesburg School Board in March.

Work would begin at the end of the school year.
