Durbin Standing Firm, Doesn't Want Burris Seated
The Illinois Supreme Court has ruled that U.S. Senator designate Roland Burris does not need Secretary of State Jesse White's signature to be appointed.

In short, the state of Illinois has legally done everything it needs to do, but the problem comes at the federal level. Senate rules dating back to the late 1800's say that the Secretary of State's signature must be present.

Because Burris doesn't have that, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin says he's standing firm and does not want Burris to be seated. He wants to see what happens in the Illinois Senate regarding the governor's impeachment. If Blagojevich is removed, Durbin wants Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn to make what he calls a "clean, legal, and respectable" appointment.

Durbin says if the issue will not likely come up for debate on the Senate floor because frankly, they have more important things to worry about. Durbin cites wanting to get the economy back on track and helping American families through this crisis as things he'd rather be doing.
