Myers Optimistic Better Days Ahead for Illinois Following Impeachment Vote, Trial
A member of the Illinois House who voted to impeach Governor Rod Blagojevich says the overwhelming sentiment to remove the governor from office is the legislature's way of saying it wants to return government to the people.

94th District State Representative Rich Myers of Macomb was among the 114 lawmakers who voted to impeach Blagojevich, a first for any Illinois governor. State Representative Milt Patterson, a Democrat from Chicago, cast the only no vote. Patterson defended the move by saying his vote was against impeachment and not in support of the governor.

Myers says the totality of evidence collected against Blagojevich is enough cause for impeachment.

"The legislature has had a problem working with the governor and felt like he really has abused his power not only with the legislature but with the people of the state of Illinois."

The Macomb Republican called the impeachment vote a positive step to creating a better government in Illinois. Myers says Lt. Governor Pat Quinn, who would replace Blagojevich, is a person the legislature can work with.

An Illinois Senate committee is working to finalize rules for the trial that will decide whether Blagojevich is thrown out of office. The trial could start later this month.
