Northland Sidewalk Issue Up for Discussion, Public Comment
The City of Galesburg COULD just go in and build new sidewalks in a neighborhood that currently has a school but no sidewalks around it, but officials are instead seeking public input on the process first.

The city is holding a public hearing Monday night to take public input on a plan to place sidewalks in the area of Gale Elementary School in the city's Northland Subdivision.

The sidewalks will be placed on Dayton Drive, West Dayton Street, Park View Road, and Brentwood Avenue.

The project, if approved, would be funded with federal dollars through the state's Safe Routes to School Program, and was the only project approved out of 44 projects the city applied for.

The intent, the city says, is to help children, especially those with disabilities, get to school safely if they choose not to take the bus or get a ride.

Despite the safety factor and the fact that city ordinance requires sidewalks, residents are reportedly opposed to having them.

The public hearing is scheduled to start at 6:30 p-m at Gale School on West Dayton Street.
