Quinn Continues to Back Corrections Chief Amid Scandal
Gov. Pat Quinn is defending his Department of Corrections director.

Quinn says he stands behind Director Michael P. Randle, who initiated an accelerated Meritorious Good Time program that released some prisoners after they served only a few weeks in jail.

Quinn says everyone makes mistakes, and has talked with Randle about the incident. He stands behind Randle's experience. "He has a very long and distinguished history in corrections," Quinn said. "He's been a warden, served every job in corrections. He's highly regarded nationwide. He's made a major mistake here, as I said. I have put in place things to correct that."

Quinn's comments come after State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) and former Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan blasted Quinn's decision to keep Randle on the payroll. Both Brady and Ryan are seeking the Republican nomination for governor.

Quinn suspended the program after learning about it through media reports. Of those prisoners released early, 56 have returned to prison.
