Another Organization Wants State to Pay Its Bills
An organization representing drug treatment providers is calling on the state to pay up.

The Illinois Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Association says the state owes its numerous providers and estimated $43 million in unpaid bills, much of that amount stretching back six months.

"Though some payments are trickling in, the state has essentially stopped paying prevention and treatment providers for their work," said Sara Howe, head of the association.

Some of the payments trickling in are in part because of pension bonds sold last week, with that money finally coming into state coffers to pay state vendors and others.

Some providers, like Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, say the state owes approximately $1.2 million for this fiscal year and nearly $300,000 from last fiscal year. LSSI provides substance abuse treatment to nearly 5,000 people annually and says the agency has almost exhausted savings and lines of credit.

Howe is calling on Gov. Pat Quinn, Comptroller Dan Hynes and Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias to come together to work on a plan to pay providers what's due.
