Illinois Economy Shows Slight Improvement
The economic decline in Illinois continues to slow down.

The latest Flash Index, a monthly report published by the University of Illinois, issued a reading of 91.2 for December. That's up 2-tenths of a point from November and it marks the third month in a row that the Flash Index has shown improvement.

Economist Fred Giertz at the University of Illinois Institute of Government and Public Affairs says the state's economy continues to show signs of steady improvement, although he warns that it could take a year or longer for the state to be in a strong situation.

"The only, kind of, hopeful sign is that I think we're on the upward trend now," Giertz said. "We're in the right direction moving towards a recovery, while, six months ago or so, the unemployment was probably lower, but we were moving down rather than up."

Giertz says the three consecutive months of improvement in the Flash Index could be an indicator that more of the same in the upcoming months.

The Flash Index starting creeping back up in October after 26 straight months of economic contraction. The dividing line between growth and contraction is 100.
