Quinn Delivers State of State Address -- DOWNLOAD AUDIO HERE
In his first State of the State speech Wednesday, Gov. Pat Quinn pushed for "more revenue."

He didn't say "tax increase," and he didn't specify a dollar amount, but the governor did say that after cutting $2 billion in spending, borrowing money and getting federal help, the state is still short. He urged lawmakers to work with him on finding a way to bring in more without squeezing people with low and modest incomes.

Quinn said lawmakers can tinker with the personal exemption and earned income tax credit to make income tax fairer. He says the state relies too heavily on property tax.

He also criticized the Republicans running for governor, all of whom say they won't raise taxes. He says their budget plans all require deep cuts in human services. "It's very important we not do that," he said.

The state has a projected budget deficit between now and the end of next fiscal year (June 30, 2011) of $13 billion. The state is nearly $5 billion behind in paying its bills now.
