|Fire at Northgate Lanes -- See Pictures Here
|UPDATED 10:18am 1/13/10 Crews are still investigating what might have caused a fire Wednesday morning at a local bowling alley.
Galesburg Firefighters were called to Northgate Lanes in the 1500 block of North Henderson Street around 6:30 am, and Battalion Chief Todd Peterson says the blaze, which started in the business' southeast corner in an old pro shop-turned office, was brought under control in about 30 minutes, but crews were on the scene for several hours.
Peterson tells WGIL there was one big concern his crews had to deal with: a roof-top air conditioning unit that was on the verge of collapsing inside the building.
"The fire, obviously, was right underneath where (the air conditioning unit) was collapsing," Peterson said. "We're looking for hidden fires, so we're having to keep guys in a safe area away from where that's collapsing in. We're going to have to figure out a way to knock out the rest of the fire, and keep our guys safe at the same time."
Crews did eventually get on the roof of Northgate Lanes to figure out what they could do with the air conditioning unit. No one was hurt, and Peterson says weather wasn't a factor in their firefighting efforts.
The bowling alley side of Northgate did sustain considerable fire, smoke, and water damage, but no estimates were available. An investigation into the cause is continuing.
A number of local bowling leagues are at least temporarily displaced, as is the Galesburg High School bowling team, which was to hold the annual Silver Streak Invitational there this weekend. Officials at GHS say the tournament will be held instead at Pekin's Sunset Lanes. It begins Saturday morning at 9:00 and directions to the facility are available online at www.streaks.org.
