Governor Candidates Debate at U of I
Five of the seven Republican candidates for Governor debated Thursday night on the University of Illinois campus. They agreed spending has to be reduced in order to fix the state multi-billion dollar budget gap; but there were differences -- as they saw it -- on where cuts should be made.

Bloomington State Senator Bill Brady wants a 10-percent across-the-board cut. But others said cuts should be more nuanced.

The candidates also said more needs to be done in order to stop corruption in state government and called for additional ethics reform. Dupage County Board Chairman Bob Schillerstrom said it begins with campaign contributions.

Candidate Dan Proft says more power needs to be taken away from long-term politicians such as Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton.

State Senator Bill Brady says further limits on campaign contributions is the way to do it.

Jim Ryan and Andy McKenna skipped the debate. Spokesmen for both candidates say they've already committed to seven debates each.
