Front-Runners Skip Debates
CHICAGO (AP) -- The front-runners in two Republican primary races took the political gamble of skipping televised debates Thursday night. The decision eliminated the chance of a major mistake, but left rivals unchallenged.

Congressman Mark Kirk passed on a Chicago face-off in the Republican race for President Barack Obama's old Senate seat. Meanwhile, former attorney general Jim Ryan and businessman Andy McKenna skipped an Urbana debate in the GOP race for Illinois governor.

The other Republican candidates for governor did not take advantage of McKenna's and Ryan's absences to go on the attack. In fact, they hardly mentioned them, although the debate moderator did.

The story was different at the Senate debate on Chicago's WLS-TV, where Kirk's opponents often went after him. They assailed his voting record, accused him of hiding and called him an entrenched politician.
