Senate Candidate Travels State Looking for Support
When you're a newcomer to politics running for office for the first time, it's hard to make your name stick with the voters.

But David Hoffman, a former federal prosecutor who worked in Chicago as the city's inspector general, is now running in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. He says he has been canvassing the entire state with the help of supporters, friends and family.

Asked how his campaign was going in Southern Illinois, where his name isn't likely a household word, Hoffman said it's going well. "We have at this point 700 volunteers and we have a big grass-roots organization that we built," Hoffman said. "I'd say my secret weapon is something that I wasn't really focusing on when I met my wife 13 years ago, but probably my secret weapon is the fact that my wife is from Downstate Alton, so that gives us a lot of support in that neck of the woods."

Hoffman, who bills himself as an outsider and a reformer, faces Cheryle Jackson, a former aide to ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich; State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias and attorney Jacob Meister in the Democratic primary race for senator.

Hoffman is scheduled to hold a town hall meeting Saturday at 10am at the Galesburg Welcome Center.
