Tax Amnesty Proposal Could Benefit MAP Grants
The state could open a two-month window for tax amnesty. If you have back taxes to pay, you'd be able to do so without penalty, if a bill sponsored by State Rep. Bob Pritchard (R-Hinckley) passes.

The money would go to the state's Monetary Award Program (MAP) for college students. Many of those students have been promised money for this semester but may not get it. Pritchard says the state's financial forecasting agency tells him a tax amnesty program could raise more than $100 million.

State Rep. Careen Gordon (D-Coal City) said she is not certain committing all of the amnesty proceeds to MAP is a good idea, in light of other social needs and the state's backlog of unpaid bills.

Pritchard's bill has been discussed in committee but has not come up for a vote.
