Attorney Wants to Close Loophole in Knoxville Trash Pickup Ordinance
The attorney for the City of Knoxville says he wants to rectify what he sees as an error in the city ordinance system sooner rather than later.

Wayne Statham told the City Council last night during an open session discussion that, while researching the city's water ordinance and changes the city's billing clerk and others want done to it, he got to looking at the city's trash ordinance, since the two typically go together billing-wise.

Statham says the issue came up last week. "When I read through, I couldn't find anything in your ordinances that requires everybody to receive a trash bill, whether they want to partake in the service or not," Statham said. "So, I'm bringing a revision that says that every residential structure with four units or less, will be billed a trash fee."

Statham says that correction, and proposed water ordinance changes, would come before the council in two weeks.

Aldermen Monday night did approve appropriating $110,000 for the proposed resurfacing in May or June of a portion of Timber Street near the Knox County Museum.

And they also got a verbal warning from City Treasurer Jim Whitney about alleged deficit spending in the six-figure range for three of the last six months. He urged aldermen to be careful in what they spend for awhile.
