Farmer's Market Coming to Knoxville; Timber Street Project Approved
FIRST REPORTED 6:00am 1/19/10 The Knoxville City Council is supportive of adding a spring and summer-time activity to its schedule that many surrounding communities already have.

Aldermen Monday night okayed giving $500 to the Knox County Fair, essentially, so fair board president Tom Collopy can start a farmers market in town.

Collopy, who's part of a local growers network who sells their goods at other area farmers markets, told aldermen he wants his to be a little different.

"I'd rather it just be local produce and not trucked-in produce, like some of the Galesburg markets," Collopy said. "I think you can just come in and set up whatever you want. But I'd just as soon not have southern Illinois come in with semis. I think we can limit it if we're a little discriminatory about it."

Collopy says he would expect to get as many as 40 vendors at the farmers market he wants to start. He says so as not to compete with other farmers markets like the one in Galesburg, he would hold his possibly on Wednesdays from May through October -- and all would be at the Knox County Fairgrounds except during fair week, when it would move to possibly the former P.E.O. home lot.

The money the city gave is expected to help with advertising.

The Knoxville City Council Monday night also approved appropriating $110,000 for the proposed resurfacing of Timber Street near the new Knox County museum.

City Engineer Kevan Cooper says that should begin in May or June once bids are sought and approved.
