Giannoulias Focuses on Hoffman in Carbondale Debate
CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias focused his attacks on two people in a Democratic Senate debate Tuesday night, and one of them wasn't even on the stage in Carbondale.

Giannoulias repeatedly criticized rival Democrat David Hoffman. He argued that electing Hoffman would be little different from electing the likely Republican nominee, Mark Kirk.

Gianoulias said both Hoffman and Kirk would back Bush administration policies of cutting taxes for the wealthy and promoting trade policies that ship American jobs overseas.

Hoffman called the accusations "disingenuous" and "absurd."

Giannoulias based his charges on two of Hoffman's positions: that it would be a mistake to end Bush-era tax cuts during a recession and that he favors free trade.

Giannoulias more or less ignored the other debate participants, Cheryle Jackson and Jacob Meister.
