State Expands Mentoring Program for Judges
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The Illinois Supreme Court is expanding its mentoring program for judges.

Court officials say the program's expansion is intended to improve public confidence in the courts and ensure judicial independence.

Judges can refer themselves to the program or be assigned a mentor by a chief court judge.

Several states offer mentoring programs for new judges, but Illinois may be the only state to make mentoring available to all judges, even those who have been on the bench for years.

Illinois has 925 circuit and associate judges.

Assignment to the peer mentor program lasts from at least six months to no longer than a year.

Current and retired judges can serve as mentors and will be specially trained for the program.
