Bigger Harvest for Deer Hunters
This year was a little better for Illinois deer hunters in terms of harvest numbers.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says hunters killed a preliminary total of 189,277 deer during the 2009-10 season that wrapped up last Sunday. The total is up from the 188,901 deer harvested during the 2008-09 season.

The harvest numbers also show a modest gain in a five county area that is comprised of Knox, Warren, Fulton, Henry and Henderson counties.

DNR spokesman Tim Schweizer says there's more hunting in Illinois than there used to be.

"The joint task force that looked at all of our deer management programs a year or so ago, recommended that we expand some hunting opportunity, provide more days, for instance, in the late-winter season, which was expanded from previously a three-day season to seven-days this year -- that proved very successful," Schweizer said.

Fulton County led the region with 5,344 deer harvested within its borders, which is the second highest total in the state behind only Pike County's 8,131. The figure for Fulton County represents 192 more deer taken this season than the previous one.

The total in Henderson County is also up - 1,021 this year compared to 992 the year before.

Knox County's harvest of 2,966 is down 14, Warren County's 1,070 is a decline of 22 and the 1,506 deer killed in Henry County is 72 fewer than last year.

DNR says hunters took 50.5 percent does and 49.5 percent males in the latest harvest.
