FIRST ON WGIL: Hans Block Death Ruled Accident
FIRST REPORTED 3:00pm 1/21/10 A crash last summer that killed the son of a former U.S. Agriculture Secretary from Knox County has been ruled an accident.

That's a finding made last week but made public this week, according to a deposition filed by County Coroner Mark Thomas into the death of 50-year old Hans Block of rural Gilson.

Thomas' deposition says Block was riding a motorcycle on Knox County Highway Seven in Sparta Township last July 21st, when it was rear-ended by a vehicle sheriffs deputies say was driven by 47-year old Gregory Dentino.

Illinois State Trooper Brandon Smick testified at the deposition that he believed Dentino's vehicle was travelling 60-miles per hour at the time of the collision, while Block's motorcycle was at or near a complete stop.

Knox County Sheriffs Deputy Keith Nothom testified that Dentino doesn't think he saw Block.

Thomas' deposition indicates that neither Block nor Dentino had alcohol or drugs in their systems at the time of the crash, though Smick testified Block's drivers license had been revoked.

Thomas says the official cause of death of the son of former U-S Ag Secretary John Block is blunt force trauma to the head and neck.
