Republican Candidate for Governor Visits Galesburg
FIRST REPORTED 6:00am 1/22/10 A strike by teachers in the Galesburg School District was averted last year by a last-minute contract agreement, but a Republican candidate for Governor says if it were up to him, teachers wouldn't even be allowed to think about a strike.

Republican Adam Andrzejewski stopped briefly in Galesburg Thursday as part of what he says is a three-day tour of around 30 different Illinois cities. He and a campaign motor home parked for a time in Galesburg.

Andrzejewski says if elected, he would work to pass legislation banning teachers strikes -- he says, in the same vain that police officers and firefighters aren't allowed to strike either.

Andrzejewski tells WGIL banning teachers strikes is the most responsible move for taxpayers.

"Right now, it's payroll, it's pension, it's perks," Andrzejewski said. "I think the taxpayers feel they can't afford it any longer. In terms of the ban on teachers' ability to strike, they would still have the ability to go to binding arbitration; so they don't lose rights and privileges, they just lose the right to hold the children as pawns in the negotiating process."

Andrzjewski says he can help areas like Galesburg hit hard by things like the Galesburg Maytag plant closure of 2004. The Kankakee County native cites reforms he wants on workers compensation and unemployment insurance.

He says both will make Illinois much more competitive and attractive for potential future employers.
